Recently, Congresswoman Lynn Jenkins wrote that our huge National debt requires strong leadership to makes tough decisions. She is right. We do need strong leadership. Our National debt is unsustainable. Federal spending must be reduced. Tough decisions must be made to fix our fiscal situation.
But here’s the rub. Having correctly stated the problem, unsustainable debt and out of control spending, in the very next paragraph she explains her opposition to cutting $520 billion from Medicare!
This reminded me of a similar letter from Senator Pat Roberts. In one paragraph he complained of out of control spending. In the next paragraph he stated his opposition to reduced Federal spending on Agrucuilture.
How does one complain of out of control spending on the one hand, then support continued spending on the other?
So I ask all candidates for elected office, please have the courage to be straight forward with us. If you think the National debt is unsustainable, what should we do about it? If you think spending is out of control, what spending programs should be reduced?
Doing this is a refreshing change. Doing less is pandering.
